A QUICK HISTORY OF ROUTE 66 IN KINGMAN

Now, listen up history buffs, because Kingman’s got a story to tell about the Mother Road! Back in 1926, when Route 66 was first established, it ran southwest from Kingman, passing through Cool Springs and Oatman before heading into California. This was a scenic route, no doubt, but it also had its challenges – narrow roads, steep grades, and those hairpin turns that could make even the most experienced driver a bit nervous!

But things changed in ’52. They realigned Route 66 to run through Yucca instead, which was a much smoother, faster route for folks heading west. This new alignment basically followed the railroad tracks and bypassed Oatman altogether. It might not have been as scenic, but it sure made the trip a whole lot quicker and easier. And you know what? That change actually helped Yucca grow! New gas stations, motels, and diners popped up along the new highway, bringing life to this little town. It’s pretty amazing how Route 66 shaped the landscape, isn’t it?

You’ll see vintage photographs, classic cars, and all sorts of memorabilia that’ll transport you back in time. Trust me, whether you’re a Route 66 enthusiast or just curious about this iconic highway, the Arizona Route 66 Museum is a must-visit! It’s a great way to get a feel for the history and the spirit of this legendary road.
