Discover Supulpa Oklahoma on Route 66

Alright, you Route 66 road dogs, Big Mike here Your Route 66 Travel Guide to Sapulpa Oklahoma. and I’m about to let you in on a little secret: Sapulpa Oklahoma is a must-stop on the Mother Road! This town, just a stone’s throw southwest of Tulsa, is packed with history, charm, and some of the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet.

Now, if you’re like me and you love classic cars, vintage signs, and all things automotive, you gotta check out Gasoline Alley Classics at 24 N Main St. These folks are serious about their automobilia, and they’ve turned an old Model T assembly plant and dealership right on Route 66 into a retail shop. They had a big ribbon cutting a while back in 2022. I hear it’s a “must-see” for anyone cruisin’ through Sapulpa Oklahoma. You can find all sorts of cool stuff for your garage, game room, or man cave, and they’ve even got some vintage Fords on display.

And history buffs, you gotta check out the Sapulpa Historical Society. They’ve got not one, not two, but three museums! There’s the Historical Museum in an old hotel, a Fire Museum, and even a restored Waite Phillips-Barnsdall Filling Station Museum. That’s a whole lotta history packed into one town! And do not forget to check out the murals around town.

Sapulpa has a little bit of Christmas cheer during the holiday season with something called the Route 66 Christmas Chute, but they are taking a break in 2025, so you will have to check it out in 2026.

But that is not all. You can see the world’s tallest gas pump at the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum. They have lots of old cars there, too. And if you are into bridges, check out the Rock Creek Bridge No. 18. It was built in 1921 for the Ozark Trail and later used for Route 66 before it was bypassed in 1952.

And don’t forget to check out the Sapulpa’s Trolly and take a picture with the “Crossroads of America” sign. Sapulpa has a lot to offer, so make sure it is on your list of places to stop on Route 66.

The Tee Pee Drive-In, a once-vibrant landmark on Route 66 in Sapulpa Oklahoma, stands as a nostalgic reminder of the golden age of drive-in theaters. Opened in 1950, its iconic neon-lit teepee sign beckoned travelers and locals alike for nearly five decades. The theater was a classic example of mid-century roadside Americana, drawing moviegoers with its unique charm and outdoor movie experience. Sadly, declining attendance led to its closure in 1999, and the structure was eventually demolished in 2022. The screen collapsed in 2020 after some strong winds. However, the story doesn’t end there. The iconic teepee sign, a beloved symbol of Sapulpa’s Route 66 heritage, was rescued and is awaiting restoration, with plans to display it in a local park. Though the Tee Pee Drive-In is gone, its memory lives on, representing a bygone era of American entertainment and the enduring allure of the Mother Road.
