Hey there, fellow Route 66 travelers! I’m back from a recent trip through Oklahoma, and I’ve got some great stops to share with you from the town of Stroud Oklahoma
. This place might be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to Mother Road charm.
First up, let’s talk about a hidden gem: the Ozark Trail Obelisk. You’ll find this historical marker 1.4 miles south of Route 66 on 3540 Rd. It’s a monument to the pre-Route 66 Ozark Trail highway system. It was erected in 1920. Standing there, you can almost picture those early automobiles navigating the dusty roads. It’s a reminder that Route 66 was built upon a network of earlier trails, and it’s definitely worth a quick detour.
Next, you gotta see the Route 66 Tool Tree in front of the Stroud True Value Hardware. This quirky piece of roadside art is exactly what it sounds like: a “tree” made entirely of tools! It’s a fun and creative tribute to the working folks who built and maintained the Mother Road. It is a testament to creativity. It is a fun photo op.
And finally, no trip to Stroud is complete without a stop at the Rock Cafe (114 W Main St). This historic eatery, built from local sandstone in 1939, is a Route 66 icon. The food is classic diner fare, and the atmosphere is pure nostalgia. The owner was the inspiration for Sally in the movie “Cars.” Be sure to check out the walls, covered with signatures and messages from travelers from all over the world. It is a must-stop.
Stroud, Oklahoma, might not be the biggest name on Route 66, but it’s got heart, history, and some truly unique attractions. From the Ozark Trail Obelisk to the quirky Tool Tree and the legendary Rock Cafe, Stroud offers a memorable slice of the Mother Road experience.
Keep exploring, and enjoy the journey!
