Welcome to Seligman birthplace of Historic Route 66 Wooden Sign

And today, I’m gonna tell ya why this town holds a special place in Route 66 history. You see, Seligman is known as the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” It was the first town to kick off the revitalization of Route 66 by getting it designated as a historic highway by the State of Arizona. This little town stepped up and helped start the revitalization of Route 66

Now, here’s where Seligman really made its mark on Route 66 history. Angel Delgadillo, a barber in town, and a bunch of folks from the area got together to save Route 66. They knew this road was somethin’ special.

So, they campaigned to get Route 66 recognized as a historic highway. And guess what? They got the governor of Arizona to make it official! That was a big win for Seligman Arizona and for Route 66.

Thanks to their efforts, folks started payin’ attention to Route 66 again. Businesses along the road got a boost, and people started comin’ back to experience that classic Route 66 charm.

Today, Seligman is known as the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66” – and it’s a must-see stop for anyone lookin’ to experience the heart and soul of the Mother Road.

Now, Seligman, Arizona, has a story to tell. It’s a real piece of Americana, especially when you’re talkin’ about Route 66. Seligman, or Prescott Junction as it was called back in the 1800s, has had its share of good times and bad, just like those towns along Route 66. It got its start as a railroad stop on the Santa Fe mainline in 1882. They even named it after one of the Seligman brothers – a family of
Railroad businessmen who helped build up this part of the country. But later on, in 1926, Route 66 put Seligman on the map. This town has seen growth, tough times, and a comeback story. A lot of those small towns across America were built up, then forgotten when the highways changed. But Seligman, they weren’t gonna let that happen. They fought to keep their town alive.

Seligman Arizona has a deep connection to Route 66, also known as the “Mother Road.” Established in 1926, Route 66 stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles, passin’ right through Seligman. This brought a whole lotta travelers through town, which led to a boom in local businesses – motels, diners, gas stations, you name it. They were all there to cater to those road-weary travelers lookin’ for a place to rest and recharge.

This brought a wave of travelers through the town, leading to a boom in local businesses, including motels, diners, and gas stations, catering to road-weary travelers seeking rest and refreshment.

Decline and Resurgence

The construction of that Interstate Highway System, especially I-40 back in ’78, well, it really shook things up for Seligman. Just like a lot of those towns along Route 66, Seligman felt the pinch when folks started zoomin’ by on that faster highway. Businesses started strugglin’, and things got kinda quiet around town. It was a tough time for Seligman and the Mother Road.

But Seligman wasn’t about to fade away like a forgotten billboard on the Mother Road. They had a trick up their sleeve, a plan to bring back the glory days. In the 1980s, Seligman became a leader in the movement to preserve Route 66 and all its history. Angel Delgadillo, a local barber with a passion for the past, joined forces with other folks in town to make somethin’ happen. They wanted to remind everyone just how special Route 66 was, so they campaigned to get it recognized as a historic highway. And guess what? They succeeded! Arizona made it official, and Route 66 was back in the spotlight.

Now, Seligman’s story kinda reminds me of Radiator Springs from that movie “Cars.” You know, the one where Lightning McQueen gets stranded in a forgotten town along Route 66? Just like Radiator Springs, Seligman and a whole bunch of other small towns across America had their heyday when Route 66 was the king of the road. Then those interstate highways came along, and things got tough. But Seligman, they found a way to bounce back, just like those Piston Cup racers. They held onto their history, and now they’re a Route 66 gem, shinin’ bright for all to see. It just goes to show ya, those small towns, they got a whole lotta heart and a whole lot of history to share.
