Missouri Weather on Route 66: A Guide to Sunshine, Storms, and Everything in Between

Hey road trippers, Big Mike here, back to give you the inside scoop on something just as important as your vehicle’s maintenance and a good map: the weather! This time, we’re talking about the great state of Missouri and what kind of weather you can expect when cruising down its section of the Mother Road.

Missouri is situated right in the middle of the country, which means it experiences a wide variety of weather conditions. There are four distinct seasons, each with its own character. You’ve got warm summers, crisp autumns, chilly winters, and unpredictable springs. Knowing what to expect can make all the difference on your Route 66 adventure through this state.

Let’s break it down month by month to help you plan accordingly:

  • January & February: These are the heart of winter. Expect average highs in the 30s and lows in the teens (Fahrenheit). Snow is common, and ice storms can occur. While not ideal for convertible cruising, the scenery can be beautiful under a blanket of snow.
  • March & April: Spring begins to emerge, but it’s a bit unpredictable. Highs can range from the 40s to the 60s, but you might still encounter a surprise snow flurry or a chilly rain. It is a good idea to pack layers!
  • May & June: Temperatures are rising! Highs in the 70s and 80s, but humidity starts to increase. This is also when severe thunderstorms become more common, so stay informed about weather conditions.
  • July & August: These are the hottest summer months. Expect highs in the upper 80s and 90s, with humidity making it feel even warmer. Stay hydrated and seek shade when possible.
  • September & October: Ah, autumn in Missouri! Highs in the 70s and 60s, crisp air, and the leaves begin to change into vibrant colors. This is an excellent time for a road trip.
  • November & December: Temperatures are dropping again. Highs in the 40s and 50s, with lows dipping below freezing. You might see some early snow, especially in December.

Besides temperature variations, there are a few other weather factors to keep in mind when traveling Route 66 through Missouri. First, tornadoes are a possibility, particularly in the spring and early summer. Keep a weather radio handy and know where to seek shelter if a warning is issued. It is important to be prepared for these events. Also, be prepared for sudden changes. Missouri weather can be unpredictable. You might start the day with sunshine and end it with a rain shower.

Here are a few of my tips for handling Missouri weather on Route 66:

  • Pack layers: Be prepared for a range of temperatures, from cool mornings to warm afternoons.
  • Check the forecast: Stay updated on the weather conditions before you head out each day.
  • Have a backup plan: If inclement weather occurs, be prepared to adjust your itinerary.
  • Stay hydrated: Especially important during the hot summer months.
  • Be aware of the dangers of severe weather: Know what to do in case of a tornado warning or other severe weather event.

Missouri’s stretch of Route 66 offers incredible scenery and unforgettable experiences. By being prepared for the state’s diverse weather, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. So, pack your bags, check the forecast, and get ready to experience the Mother Road through the heart of America!

Safe travels, everyone, and enjoy the ride!
