Now, I haven’t had the pleasure of visitin’ Atlanta myself just yet, but from everything I’ve heard, it’s a place that truly captures the spirit of Route 66. Let’s dive into what makes this Illinois town a worthy stop on your next road trip.

A Big Fella and a Bunyan-Sized Hot Dog

One of the first things that puts Atlanta illinois on the map is its famous Paul Bunyan statue. And this ain’t just any Paul Bunyan, folks. This 19-foot-tall fiberglass giant, known as Tall Paul, is holdin’ a massive hot dog! It’s a quirky roadside attraction that’s become an iconic symbol of Atlanta, and you better believe it’s a prime photo op. It is a must-stop for any Route 66 traveler.

Step Back in Time at the Palms Grill Cafe

When your stomach starts rumblin’, I hear the Palms Grill Cafe is the place to be. This historic diner, established in 1934, is like a time machine back to the golden age of Route 66. It was a popular stop on Route 66.

For those who love vintage games, the Route 66 Arcade Museum is a must-visit. Word is, it’s packed with classic arcade games and pinball machines that’ll transport you back to the days of retro gaming.

There is also a Memory Lane Museum in nearby Lincoln, IL. It has all kinds of Route 66 memorabilia.

While these are some of Atlanta’s highlights, there’s even more to discover. If you happen to be in town during the annual Route 66 Garage Sale Weekend, you’re in for a treat. From what I gather, it’s a celebration of all things Route 66.

Important Note: While there’s a famous Route 66 attraction called Shea’s Gas Station Museum, it’s actually located in Springfield, Illinois, not Atlanta.

Big Mike’s Bottom Line (Even Though I Haven’t Been There Yet!)

Even though I haven’t personally experienced Atlanta, Illinois, yet, everything I’ve heard points to it being a true Route 66 gem. It’s got that classic roadside charm, a unique history tied to both the railroad and the Mother Road, and a welcoming atmosphere that’s sure to make any traveler feel right at home. I’m definitely adding Atlanta to my list of must-visit Route 66 towns, and I suggest you do the same!
